I’m an author, speaker, and coach.
I help busy educators find the inspiration, courage and resources to nurture joyful, and authentic literacy learning one next-step at a time.
Why this crazy passion about literacy?
It’s simple – the kids are counting on us.
When children become literate, a world of opportunity opens to them.
When we fail to get them reading and writing, early and well, their opportunities and life chances narrow significantly.
Even more importantly;
We CAN deliver what they need.
We CAN get kids off the start they deserve!
There are well-defined steps we can take to get all kids reading, writing, talking and thinking at higher levels.
We just need to commit and start to take small steps one by one beginning TODAY.
And, that, my friends, is why I am driven to create and maintain this blog. I simply want to do whatever I can do to help more educators help more children become REAL LIFELONG readers, writers, and thinkers.
Throughout my 30+ years in education I’ve worked as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, Reading Recovery teacher, elementary principal, and curriculum and staff development specialist in literacy. During that time, I’ve been blessed to work alongside scores of other committed and caring educators from whom I have learned so much. Together, we’ve created the kinds of classrooms that I want for all children.
In these classrooms:
- Abundant and real reading and writing happen every day.
- Authentic choice draws students into deep and sustained engagement.
- Relationships and environment together create a safe haven for deep learning.
- Kids are accountable participants in meaningful conversations throughout the day.
- Establishing a lifelong love of learning is a goal of every adult in the school.
In my experience, accomplishing amazing things in schools takes a combination of bravery, inspiration, information and collaboration. I hope this site will provide you with all of these.
I’m not only a teacher, but a mother, wife, daughter, grandmother, friend, staff developer . . .I’m bits and pieces of all of the roles I’ve played and experiences I’ve had throughout my lifetime. Each experience I’ve had along the way has touched and shaped me; the wonderful, the challenging, the painful, and the amazing.
Oh. . .
And I love popcorn with lots of butter, and dark, dark chocolate.
I love waterskiing because it makes me feel summery and young and free.
I love quilting because it allows me put small, unrelated scraps together in new and beautiful ways.
I love to read. I love to write.
I love to exchange ideas with other educators – about what we’re reading and thinking and working on in our schools, about what’s working and what’s driving us crazy with trying.
This blog allows me to draw my circle even wider and involve more voices in these conversations. I truly hope yours will be one of the voices I have a chance to connect with.
I know you have something important to contribute to the conversation.
