If we want our kids to become readers, we have to start by helping them to fall in love reading.
In order to help them fall in love with reading we have to use the best campaign material available. . . GREAT BOOKS!
We sell kids on reading by selling kids on books. We sell kids on books by bringing books to them day after day after day. We bring them books that are amazing, beautiful, exciting, mesmerizing, funny, poignant, adventuresome, interesting, and mysterious. We bring them books that make them wonder, and light up with amazement, and laugh, and feel empathy, and connect with their own lives. We bring them new books, hot off the press, and old favorites. We bring them books to support their current interests and we bring them books to stretch their minds in new directions.
Every teacher can sell kids on reading and grow students’ love of books by starting right now and building on three SUPER SIMPLE and SENSIBLE actions every day:
- Read great books aloud with passion. Every day. As often as you can. At every age.
- Give students lots of opportunities to talk with each other about what they are reading and why they would (or would not) recommend it to someone else.
- Let students freely explore the book collections in our classrooms and in our libraries. Let them handle, and ponder, and page through, and sample, and smell, and wonder at books.
The only true gateway into the world of reading, is by motivating students to want to read something. Learning to read is just too darned difficult, requires too much time, too much energy, and too much sustained attention to do it for any other reason. But when children start to realize the wonder of books, the places they can go, the people they can meet, and the things they can learn through books, we start to stand a real chance at helping them become successful and lifelong readers.
Help kids fall in love with reading by spreading the love of books.
